Hybrid - Off the tee:

  • Tee it up about a quarter of an inch.
  • Play ball forward of center.
  • Catch at bottom of arc.

Playing in the wind:

  • Left shoulder low, right shoulder high.
  • Play ball back into stance.
  • Swing easier.
  • Take more club.

To stop slicing:

  • Move left hadn’t over to see 2-3 knuckles.
  • Use light grip pressure.
  • Keep left arm close to chest at impact.
  • Rotate left arm through impact.

To stop hooking:

  • Weaken left hand.
  • Place right hand on top of club.
  • During transition, left hip moves back quicker.

High/soft Lob:

  • Open clubface 45 degrees.
  • Left thumb straight down shaft.
  • Move right hand on top.
  • Keep clubface open through shot.
  • Take club outside and cut across.
  • Don’t be afraid to hit it hard.

Basic chip shot:

  • Grip down.
  • Light grip pressure.
  • Feel weight of clubhead.
  • Open body.
  • Twist hips and shoulders square.

Chipping out of heavy rough:

  • Stand closer.
  • Stand taller.
  • Open clubface.
  • Raise your hands up.
  • Hit to spot.

Downhill chip shot:

  • Weight on inside of left foot.
  • Left knee kicked in.
  • Widen your stance.
  • Left shoulder down, right shoulder up.
  • Open clubface.

Chipping - ball below feet:

  • Grip to end of club.
  • Slightly open face.
  • Bend knees toward target.
  • Open stance, aim left.
  • Bend at waist.
  • Clubhead at bottom of arc.
  • Air for a landing spot on the green.

Chipping - ball above feet:

  • Aim right.
  • Use lower lofted club.
  • Grip up on club.

Chipping - downhill lie:

  • Establish bottom of arc.
  • Position bottom of arc in middle of stance.
  • Lean downhill.
  • Brace yourself on inside of left foot.
  • Widen your stance.
  • Left shoulder low, right shoulder high.
  • Open clubface.
  • Take club up and away, swing across body.
  • Swing hard.

Chipping - uphill lie:

  • Position body to swing up slope.
  • Widen stance.
  • Right knee kicked in.
  • Right shoulder low, left shoulder high.
  • Use square clubface.

The first tee: Complete backswing and start down at the same speed.


When you’re under pressure:

  • Walk a beat slower.
  • The number one reason you fail is that you hold onto the club too tightly. Maintain constant grip pressure.

40y wedge: Start with hips slid forward.


Chipping - high trajectory:

  • Weaken left hand.
  • Ball forward in stance.
  • Slide hips forward.

Chipping - low trajectory:

  • Strengthen left hand.
  • Ball back in stance.
  • Slide hips forward.

Chipping with a putting setup:

  • Take 5 iron.
  • Use putting position.
  • Hands up high.
  • Lean shaft forward.
  • Weight on left foot.
  • Use putting stroke.

Fundamentals of putting:

  • Keeping left elbow bent connects arms and shoulders in one unit.
  • Feet shoulder width apart.
  • Ball forward middle of stance.
  • Take back with left hand.
  • Left elbow angle consistent.
  • Follow through with head still.

Long putt: Allow lower body to help make stroke.


Putting breathing:

  • Two practice strokes.
  • Take deep breath.
  • Exhale.
  • Hold half way out.

Putting drills:

  • Breathing.
  • Close your eyes.
  • Look at the hole.
  • Look at your hands.

Teaching seniors:

  • Light grip pressure.
  • Active hands.
  • Narrow stance.
  • Right foot back.
